Discovery Award


An Achievement Award for the over 50s which grew out of the Duke of Edinburgh Award

A Rewarding Challenge, divided into Four Sections at Three Levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Two members of Stafford U3A have now achieved the Gold Award. Other members are working towards the other Levels.


Section 1 - Service in the Community

Jenny was an active member of the Stafford U3A Committee, Sue planned and hosted a Cream Tea fundraiser at home for Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity and raised £375, Chris encouraged retired members of her church to knit for the charity International Aid Overseas.

Section 2 - Recreational Pursuit

Jenny set out to improve her fitness with increased physical activity, Sue completed planned walks, Chris walked in the country in spring and summer, taking photos of woods, flowers and fallen trees after storms.

Section 3 - Hobby or Interest

Jenny maintained and improved a large garden on a sloping site, Sue achieved approx 3000 stitches in 63 hours of Cross Stitch Embroidery, Chris completed various Craft projects.

Section 4 - Journey of Discovery (A physical challenge or personal research)

Jenny went mountain walking in Spain, Sue researched the journey taken by King Charles II on his escape from Battle, Chris researched the development of the first iron bridge in the world at Ironbridge.



The group meets every six weeks to discuss members' progress towards their own goals which are recorded by means of photos, diary entries, notes, crafts, etc.
